Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART)
General Description
Championship Auto Racing Teams, or CART for short was sanctioned and held its first race in 1979 at the Phoenix Motor Speedway. It was spawned after the collapse and limited success of several racing leagues before it. CART's main proponent was Dan Gurney, a team owner who decided that the loose association of team owners, drivers, and race promoters needed to be strengthened. His, "White Paper," letter to those in the same situation as he found himself convinced them to form CART as a sanctioning body for open wheel races in the United States. CART is successful until the early 1990's when Tony George, the owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, lobbied for significant changes within the series. In 1996, CART and the Indy Racing League officially split by holding separate events on the same weekend.
