Introduction |
Surveys With ConfidenceProject date: June 1998 - September 1998. See a screen shot from one of the Surveys With Confidence movies I produced. This opens up a new window. Download and watch Surveys With Confidence movies. BackgroundSurveys With Confidence (SWC) is an application suite that provides data collection and analysis capabilities to Marketing Research professionals. The application suiteis made up of three products: a data collection engine from SPSS's Data Entry for Windows to collect the data; the data processing engine from SPSS's flagship product, SPSS 9.0, to analyze the data; and an assortment of survey planning tools, training tools, and samples. The tools and samples are intended to give people without a statistical background insight into data collection and analysis methods. The tools were to be produced using various technologies. My part in the project was to produce the training films using a Lotus product called ScreenCam. This product captures a computer's monitor display in real time so screen movements are recorded. (ScreenCam is comparable to another product called "Camtasia".) Design ChallengesThis project had many design issues and tested my problem solving skills. In the end it was the most challenging, but most satisfying project I was involved in. All the design issues that occurred fell into one of four categories: Screen Layout - where to put screen elements, how to keep placement consist and, and color and resolution issues; Branding issues - how to keep a consist and look and feel among all parts of the application suite; Captions -- the issues concerning the caption boxes located in the upper right corner of the screen; and Capture issue - technical issues such as font and cursor display. On the following pages I describe the design challenges I came up against and how I worked with the team and the available resources to resolve those challenges. |
