Zany Corneto appears in the Recueil Fossard, plates
from which are reproduced in [Duchartre: Pictorial Supplement]. The title
page of the Recueil reads (in translation):
Collection of several fragments of the first Italian comedies
produced in France during the reign of Henri III wherein is seen the
different characters assigned to the actors, and the plots of their plays
intersperced with buffoonery, and with many extravagances. with. the
costumes of all their characters, both serious and comic, of whom the most
well-known were sir Leandre, Dona Cornelia, Francisquine Harlequin, sir
Dottor, Pantalon, and Zani who were the original characters, and the models
for other comedians who have appeared since during the reigns of Henri IV and
Louis XIII, and Louis the Great. all engraved in several prints of which
several are illuminated and sorted in order by Mr.Fossard member of

zanni (plural and singular forms of the word are the same):
While the zanni are a class of actors, generally dull-witted servants
who nevertheless outwit their masters -- Harlequin and Brighella [Duchartre, p.124]
are examples of zanni -- this zanni's name is Zany, a proper
name [Duchartre, p. 132].
While the zanni are often portrayed playing outlandish instruments (a
bellows, kitchen utensils, etc.), Zany is shown playing a real stringed instrument
[Duchartre, p. 325].
Scapino, another 'multi-instrumental' (musical) zanni, is described in
[Grantham, p. 238].
