Note to Dr. Wolfe:
'The Black Crook' was perhaps the first real musical/burlesque show on the American
stage in the mid-19th century. (Who was the American artist RC who did
the dancing girls [i.e., the cover for a booklet (early 20th century) on the 'real
story' behind the creation of the American Black Crook?)
Trying to steal a little of the success of the American production, Harry Paulton
put on a 'Black Crook' in London (late 19th century) whose plot owed more to the
fairy-comedy 'La biche au bois' ['A doe in the woods'] than to the earlier
New York production.
