Another title to this picture is "Unhappy Savoyard."

-- the h.-g. in the sign ('Vielle royale') is Pearl's h.-g., from Louis Binet's illustration of the Restif de la Bretonne story "La jolie vielleuse"
-- the h.-g. being played by the baroque musician (in the shop) is from a Watteau sketch
-- the woman looking over the shoulder of the aristocratic-type musician is from Binet (there is a resemblance to Pearl/Pearl's sister Margaret)
