The assignment for the following was to create a visual play on words. I did so by playing off of the dual meaning of a "beetle" -- A Volkswagen Beetle and a the insect-type of Beetle. I found the first two photographs depicting the individual "Beetles" and used Adobe Photoshop to combine the images into the third, an amalgamated "Beetle".

The following was a 5 phase project. We were to take a simplified icon and manipulate it in various ways to change it's meaning. Phase 1 is the original icon. Phase 2 is the icon with a color change intent on changing the meaning of the icon. Phase 3 is the icon integrated into an existing setting. Phase 4 is the icon recreated using text. Phase 5 is the icon created out of a photo collage.

The first of the following images is a photograph of Walt Disney. The second is the photograph recreated using nothing but varying degrees of overlapping text shown as swatches in the third image.

Partners The first program we studied was Adobe Photoshop. The following was completed using 7 objects scanned into the computer.
  • The original photograph serves as the background. It had a clear sky and a red brick sidewalk
  • A wind-up toy in the shape of mickey feet which have been inserted over my feet in the photograph
  • A nametag that was inserted where an cast member nametag would be found
  • A picture of tinkerbell
  • A commemorative gold coin used as fairy dust for tink
  • A "Pin Trader Mickey" trading pin
  • A College Program trading pin that was copied, color changed and repeated to create textured sidewalk blocks

Apartment 2 The second program we learned was Adobe Illustrator. We were instructed to choose a room or building and create a rendering of it from an overhead view. A few details to notice: Harry Potter book next to my bed, which I was reading at the time, Illustrator 10 Textbook on my bed, the jumble of textbooks on the coffee table in the Living Room are all books that I used throughout college, the speaker wire that runs from the Living Room to the Computer Room because we wanted stereo in both rooms, and the name Richard Johnson (my father) on the caller iD.

The final project of the class was to create a still life using 3 object surrounding a theme. My project was titled College Life. It consists of my 2 favorite kinds of caffeine: chocolate and Coke as well as a Feminist Theory book, a staple in my educational diet.
