Rebecca's Home Page
Here you can learn everything you ever wanted to know (and probably much more) about Rebecca Johnson. I am graduating March 2004 from DePaul University with a Undergraduate degree in Women's Studies and a minor in Human Computer Interaction. Such an unusual combination of majors you might say. Well, you are not alone. I started my career at DePaul as a Computer Science major. A mistake from day one, several C++ coding nightmares in rapid succession convinced me that CS was not the place for me. With equally short stops in the History, English, and Philosophy departments, I finally decided to combine all of the above with a Women's Studies degree. I participated in the Walt Disney World College Program in Fall of 2001, loved every minute of it but was more than ready to come back when it was over. I began to get more involved in women's causes and, in a natural progression from working with kids of all ages at Epcot in Walt Disney World, tried to focus on young girls and education. Technology training and confidence is sorely lacking in today's girls. I decided to take an active part in "bridging the digital divide" as it is currently termed. As a life-long student my only possible course of action was to take technology classes. Human Computer Interaction looked to be the most versatile and I realized quickly that my C++ coding fiascos of freshman year would not be repeated in this branch of technology. I am happy to say that the two degrees compliment one another nicely. Women's Studies is still my focus, but I am confident that having a technology degree in a field that is largely technologically challenged is an assett. I am currently combining my talents for an NGO some friends and I are starting. I am to be the grantwriter for Digital Achievements Foundation, an organization dedicated to bringing technology camps to kids in the city where the need is greatest. After the intial grant-writing process, I will head up a division of the company specifically to provide girls with technology training. |
