From its humble beginning
During
the 1903-1904 school year, J. Sterling Morton East opened its doors at 2423 S.
Austin Blvd. Henry Victor Church welcomed students as the school’s first
principal. The couple of rooms found at the
Clyde
School
at 31st and
Ogden
had grown too small. The town on the prairie had started to grow and
expand and the community needed a formal high school. Named after Julius
Sterling Morton; founder of Arbor Day, the school continued to grow through out
the years.
From its humble beginnings over a hundred years ago, J. Sterling
Morton High School has become one of the largest high school districts in the
State of
Illinois
. Currently District 201 is home to almost 8,0000 students who attend
classes in four separate facilities. Over these past one hundred years,
Morton
High School
has provided its communities and surrounding neighbors with highly talented and
motivated students and faculty. Graduates have succeeded in both private
and professional sectors of society along with government and public service.
Athletes have enjoyed successful collegiate and professional careers while many
other graduates have obtained fame in the performing arts. Morton’s long
and proud history of academic education combined with excellent elective
programs has influenced many generations. The surrounding communities
share a heritage of hard working citizens who value education and family which
has made J. Sterling Morton High School the school it is today.
