FOREIGN VOLUNTEERS IN THE GERMAN ARMED FORCES 1939-45

Belarusian volunteers

At the end of summer in 1944 the formation of the 30th SS Grenadiers division began out of the Siegling's "Belarus" ground support brigade and the Byelorussian self-defence detachments. The division consisted of 4 regiments (75th, 76th, 77th Waffen-Grenadiers SS Regiment, 56th artillery regiment, 68th Cossack SS battalion of a cavalrymen, the 30th SS communication battalion, the 30th SS engineer battalion). The division headquarters included German and Byelorussian officers. The non-commissioned officers were almost all Byelorussians. In September of 1944 the formation was transfered to France to fight against partisans and English-American troops. The division suffered heavy casualties. In December of 1944 the 30th Grenadiers division was oficially disbanded. The Germans that were left were transfered to the 38th SS "Nibelung" division and the Byelorussians were transfered to the 1st ROA division.
