Danish volunteers

With the "support" of the Danish government recruitment to the Freikorps Danmark began and by Sept. 1941 and 1,000 men had volunteered. By May of the following year Danmark was sent to Russia in Totenkopf near Demyansk. In June the Soviets captured the town of Vassilievschtshina and Danmak was given the task of pushing them out. With heavy casualties they were successful despite furious counterattacks. By August the unit was down to 22%. In Dec. they returned from rest in Denmark and were sent to the Velikje Luki sector. In Jan. 1943 the Germans withdrew from the area and Danmark moved northwards. In March the Freikorps was disbanded.
